Physical Education
“We don't stop playing because we grow old; we grow old because we stop playing.’ John F. Kennedy.
PE is led by Mrs Gaule
We tell the children that PE lessons teach us how to keep our bodies and minds fit and healthy, through movement, balance and control.
Physical Education Intent
Nursteed School aims to inspire all children to develop a love of physical activity and sport. We are dedicated to ensuring children develop healthy minds, as well as bodies and support our children's well-being by encouraging them to lead a healthy, active lifestyle and to continue a lifelong participation in physical activity and sport.
We aim to ensure that our delivery of physical education allows ALL children to learn the skills and mindset to leave primary school with the capabilities to be successful in their sporting challenges and active lifestyles at secondary school and beyond.
Physical Education Implementation
At Nursteed, we follow the National Curriculum and use the scheme Get Set 4 PE to deliver our PE lessons and to meet our objectives. All children receive two hours a week of PE, have opportunities for movement throughout the school day and many children participate in after school sports clubs.
EYFS
We use the statutory guidance set out for EYFS as a basis for planning the physical development of the children. We encourage the pupils to develop confidence and control of the way they move, and the way they handle tools and equipment. We give all children the opportunity to undertake activities that offer appropriate physical challenges, both indoors and outdoors, using a wide range of resources to support specific skills.
Key Stage 1:
Through a variety of sports and invasion games children experience key fundamental skills such as throwing, catching, balancing, agility and co-ordination. Children have the opportunities to build upon tactics for attacking and defending.
Key Stage 2:
Pupils continue to develop and broaden a range of skills across a variety of sports and invasion games. Children have the opportunity to assess and evaluate their own performances, thinking about how they can improve their outcomes.
Swimming:
All children in Key Stag 2 have the opportunity to swim for two terms. Children are taught how to swim confidently using a range of strokes over 25 metres.
Physical Education Impact
Through monitoring and assessment, pupils across the school will meet the expected standard in PE with some pupils working above expected standard (especially those pupils who attend external sporting activities). We help motivate pupils to participate in a variety of sports through quality teaching that is engaging and fun. From our lessons, our pupils learn to take responsibility for their own health and fitness, many of whom also enjoy the success of competitive sports. We equip our pupils with the necessary skills and a love for sport. They will hopefully grow up to live happy and healthy lives utilising the skills and knowledge acquired through PE.
