This website provides you with access to the scheme we currently use in school. Use this daily to teach the relevant new skills. Even if you don’t have access to a printer, children can still watch the video and record their answers on paper. Answers are provided so they can mark their own work.


Times tables

We practice for at least 5 minutes daily in school. All of these websites allow children to practice their times tables. Although the government multiplication check has been cancelled due to the current situation, children need to continue practicing these regularly as they underpin many areas of maths. This should be a combination of writing, grammar, spelling and reading.



This should be done a daily basis. If you don’t have access to many books you can use the websites below to access audiobooks. Remember you don’t always have to read a ‘book’, why not try a magazine, leaflet or newspaper?


I have attached a reading comprehension called ‘The Story of Romulus and Remus’ to complete. Answers can be recorded on plain paper and marked against the answers. This is differentiated – 1 star being the easiest text to read and 3 stars being the trickiest. (SEE END OF PAGE)



Complete the ‘Describing a Creature’ home learning tasks as an introduction to our Romans topic. (SEE END OF PAGE) You will need to complete the reading task FIRST



Use these websites to practice different aspects of grammar. You can choose some ideas from the list below so you know you are focussing on the correct objectives.


Year 4 SPaG checklist

You must know and use...

  • Consonants, vowels, verbs, adjectives, nouns and adverbs
  • Frontal adverbials – Later that day, In total silence, Without blinking.
  • Prefixes – anti-  auto-  tele-
  • Pronouns – I, He, They, we - His, Hers
  • A rock – an apple – a – consonant an – vowel
  • Conjunctions – when, before, after, while, so because
  • Prepositions – before, after, during, in,
  • Know when to use paragraphs - Time, Place, Topic, Person
  • Headings and sub-headings
  • Past and present tense - He has gone, he is going,
  • Clause, and subordinate clause
  • Direct speech “Hello. “
  • Plural and possessive ‘s – Anna’s   toys
  • Apostrophes – the girl’s name, the girls’ names
  • Standard English – We were not we was



Focus on learning the statutory spellings. Your child will know whether they are learning the year 2 common exception words, year 3/4 statutory spellings or if they have moved on to the year 5/6 words. Refer to your childs homework folder for an idea of which list they are on. 


Ways to learn spellings:

  • Create your own Look, Say, Cover, Write, Check grid (like we do for homework)
  • Write each word and draw a picture to go with it
  • Write sentences containing each word
  • Colour writing (give each word a different colour and write a line of each)
  • Speed spelling (spell each word as many times as you can in 1 minute)
  • Sentence dictation (get someone to read you a sentence containing each word and write them down).
